Taliban launches offensive before Afghanistan elections

At least six Afghan policemen were killed on Wednesday when a Taliban suicide bomber blew himself up outside the country’s Interior Ministry in Kabul.

It was the latest in a series of attacks ahead of Saturday’s presidential election, which the Islamists have vowed to disrupt, and came on the last day of campaigning.

“Our enemy is always one step ahead of us. But what can we do, wait and do nothing? We have to help each other and stop the enemy. Our brothers and sisters lost their lives today. And of course it’s very sad for all of us,” said one woman, a Kabul resident.

Officials said in northern Afghanistan nine civilians were killed by the Taliban.

It has described as “fake” the election process, warning people not to take part. The vote comes at a crucial time, with most foreign troops preparing to leave the country. euronews.com
