Aircraft from the Israel Defense Forces have launched a number of missiles at a strategic target close to the Syrian capital, Damascus, Israeli and Arab media report.
Several missiles were reportedly fired toward a target in the countryside south of Damascus, with some intercepted by the Syrian Air Defense and others hitting their intended target.
Arab outlet Al-Masdar News, citing its sources, reported that the target was an ammunition depot of the Syrian Army, located between the towns of Kiswah (Kesweh) and Sahnaya. “Loud explosions” were heard as the missiles hit their target, the news service said.
Other sources, however, claim the target was an Iranian military base in the Kiswah area, some 13 kilometers (8 miles) from the city of Damascus.
According to a report by I24News at least one missile reached the base, while others were stopped by Syria’s anti-missile defenses.
The warplanes reportedly launched the missiles from Lebanese airspace.
Videos have emerged on social media purporting to show the moment one of the Israeli missiles was intercepted by Syrian Air Defense. rt.com
Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman has warned Syria that Israel will destroy its air defense system if Syria fires an anti-aircraft missile at Israeli aircraft again. Speaking on Israel public radio Sunday morning, Liberman said, “The next time the Syrians use their air defense systems against our airplanes, we will destroy all of them without thinking twice.”
His threat comes after Syria fired anti-aircraft missiles at Israeli military jets overnight Thursday into Friday.
The Syrian military said the jets struck a military site near Palmyra, while Israel says they targeted a weapons shipment to Iran-backed Hezbollah. Syria claims their missiles downed one Israeli jet and hit another, which Israel rejected as “absolutely untrue.”
“Our central problem, and this above and beyond all of the other issues, is the transfer of advanced weapons from Syria to Lebanon,” Liberman said.”Every time we identify a transfer like this, we will work to prevent the transfer of game-changing weapons. On this issue there will not be any compromise,” the outspoken Defense Minister added. Liberman has not shied away from threatening rhetoric since taking over the Defense Ministry last year.
Friday’s encounter was the most serious clash between Israel and Syria since the start of the Syrian civil war six years ago. Tension between the two countries de-escalated as the conflict progressed, but the threats have increased between the two countries in recent months., along with Israel’s reported strikes. An airstrike near Palmyra would be one of the deepest inside Syria since the beginning of the fighting. cnn.com
The Syrian Army says Israeli military jets hit a “military target” near Palmyra in a raid overnight. In retaliation the jets were targeted by Syrian anti-aircraft missiles.
According to a Syrian Army statement, a total of four Israeli jets breached Syrian airspace on Friday morning, Reuters reports. Syria’s air defenses shot down one of the Israeli jets over “occupied ground” and damaged another.
The Israeli Army confirmed it had conducted airstrikes on several targets in Syria, Israel National News reported. However, the IDF insists that none of the jets was harmed.
“At no point was the safety of Israeli civilians or the IAF [Israeli Air Force] aircraft compromised,” an Israeli military spokesman said.
Following the breach of the country’s airspace, the Syrian Army warned Israel of “direct” retaliation “with all means at its disposal,” Haaretz reports.
Earlier, a spokesperson of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) told Sputnik that Israeli military jets were targeted by anti-aircraft missiles after they struck several targets in Syria.
“I can say that the sirens were the result of the incident,” an Israel Defense Forces spokesperson told Sputnik, referring to the launch of missiles at Israeli planes that carried out attacks on targets in Syria. rt.com
The air force of the Israeli enemy hit al-Mezzeh military airport west of Damascus just after midnight.
A military source told SANA that several missiles were fired from the Lake Tiberias area and landed in the surroundings of al-Mezzeh airport at 12:25 after midnight, causing a fire to erupt.
The source said the new Israeli attack came in support of the terrorist organizations “to raise their morale”.
The General Command of the Army and the Armed Forces has warned the Israeli enemy of the repercussions of this “flagrant attack”, said the source.
The Command pledged to continue its war on terrorism “until eliminating it and cutting off the arms supporting it,” the source added.
Al-Mezzeh military airport came under a similar Israeli attack on December 7 of last year, where several ground-to-ground missiles were fired from inside the occupied Palestinian territories to the west of Tall Abu al-Nada (hill). The missiles hit near the airport and caused a fire to break out but no casualties. sana.sy

“Is Israel really just defending itself, or is the Zionist state’s bombardment of Gaza a pre-meditated war crime?
Israel has killed over ten times more Palestinians in the past week alone than Hamas rockets have killed Israelis in the last 13 years.”

ISIS fighters smashed a force of Italian and British Special Ops troops on Wednesday, April 27 in the first battle of its kind in Libya, debkafile’s military and intelligence sources report. This battle will result in the delay of the planned Western invasion of Libya, as the encounter proved that European forces are not ready for this kind of guerilla warfare. The sources also said the planners of the invasion were surprised by the high combat skills of the ISIS fighters.
Our sources report the following details:
The convoy of Italian marines, British special forces and Libyan troops was traveling from the northwestern city of Misrata toward the ISIS stronghold of Sirte, located 273 kilometers to the southeast, when it was ambushed and hit hard by ISIS forces.
Italian troops were among those killed or wounded in the battle, but there is no information whether there were British casualties as well. Some reports say members of the Western force were taken prisoner by ISIS, although they have yet to be identified. It is possible that any hostages are from the Libyan National Army, a militia commanded by Gen. Khalifa Haftar, a Libyan who has American citizenship. debka.com
An Italian flag was burned in Derna , Libya , during a demonstration against the continued air strikes by the Libyan National Army (Lna) led by Khalifa Haftar. This was reported by the local newspaper Libya Herald, explaining that the demonstrators condemned what they call interference by Italy and the United Nations in Libya . A similar event was held in Benghazi in recent days.
The former leader of France’s far-right National Front (FN), Jean-Marie Le Pen, was fined 30,000 euros ($34,000) Wednesday for repeating his view that the Nazi gas chambers were a “detail” of history.
A Paris court found 87-year-old Le Pen guilty of the charge of denying crimes against humanity.
The court rejected Le Pen’s claim that he had parliamentary immunity from prosecution.
The judges ordered the verdict to be published in three newspapers and said Le Pen must also pay 10,001 euros in damages to three charities which brought the case.
Le Pen, who has been succeeded by his daughter Marine as FN leader, first made the comments about the gas chambers in 1987. He repeated them in 1997 in Germany and then in 2008 and 2009 in the European Parliament.
He returned to the subject in April last year, telling BFMTV: “Gas chambers were a detail of the war, unless we accept that the war is a detail of the gas chambers.” france24.com
Lebanese militants and Israeli Defense Force (IDF) traded cross-border fire after the news that Hezbollah commander Samir Kuntar was killed in an airstrike in Damascus. Israel fired artillery over the border after rocket fire hit northern Israel on Sunday.
The IDF “responded with targeted artillery fire following the rockets that hit Israel earlier today from southern Lebanon,” an army statement said.
Meanwhile, Lebanon’s national news agency NNA said Israel fired nine rounds of artillery at the south of the country.
No casualties were reported on either side. rt.com
Jpost: “Free Syrian Army: Hezbollah is lying, we killed Kuntar, not Israel”
And this brings us back to the insurgency in Sinai. In addition to claiming that Hamas enables Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, Cairo accuses Hamas of having directly carried out several mass casualty terror attacks against its security forces. The most recent one, carried out in late October 2014, killed 31 soldiers. It precipitated Cairo’s decision to expand its security zone between Gaza and Sinai from 1 to 2 kilometers and begin emptying the Egyptian side of the border-straddling city of Rafah. jpost.com
Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard was released on Friday after 30 years in an American prison but he will stay in the United States under strict parole conditions in a case that strained relations between the two allies for decades.
Pollard, a former civilian intelligence analyst for the U.S. Navy, was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted in 1987 of passing classified information to Israel.
He was released from a federal prison in North Carolina and headed to New York, where he was set up for electronic monitoring as required under his parole, according to spokesmen for the Federal Bureau of Prisons and U.S. Marshals Service.
“After 30 years in prison, he wants to get his life back on track,” said Eliot Lauer, one of Pollard’s attorneys.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, which has long pushed for Pollard to be freed, welcomed his release. But Netanyahu has urged Israelis not to celebrate too much in case that damages efforts to persuade the U.S. government to let Pollard leave for Israel sooner. reuters.com
