US rejects Moscow-proposed UN mechanism to probe Syria chemical attacks based on facts

The US has firmly rejected a Russian-drafted Security Council resolution seeking to establish an objective investigative mechanism to probe all allegations of chemical attacks in Syria “based on impeccable and irrefutable data.”

“We want to rise above the differences and propose [the] creation of a new international investigative body,” tasked with establishing facts and seeking those responsible for the use of chemical weapons in Syria “based on the impeccable and irrefutable data obtained in a transparent and credible way,” Russia’s permanent representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzia told the Security Council on Tuesday.

The mandate of the Joint Investigative Mechanism (JIM) of the UN and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) expired in November following a number of failed attempts by the UNSC to extend its authority. Moscow has repeatedly criticized JIM’s handling of the investigation of chemical attacks in Syria, including the April incident in Khan Shaykhun in Idlib province. rt.com

Syrian govt chemical allegations could encourage terrorists

Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov has questioned an accusation from the U.S., that the Syrian government is planning a chemical attack. He said Washington’s claim could encourage terrorists to use chemical weapons as a provocation, and blame it on President Assad. Sergey Lavrov made those remarks during a meeting with Germany’s foreign minister.

U.S. coalition preparing false flag chemical attack in Syria?

The White House issued a stern warning to Syrian President Bashar Assad on Monday night as it claimed “potential” evidence that Syria was preparing for another chemical weapons attack.

In an ominous statement issued with no supporting evidence or further explanation, Press Secretary Sean Spicer said the U.S. had “identified potential preparations for another chemical weapons attack by the Assad regime that would likely result in the mass murder of civilians, including innocent children.”

He said the activities were similar to preparations taken before an April 2017 attack that killed dozens of men, women and children, and warned that if “Mr. Assad conducts another mass murder attack using chemical weapons, he and his military will pay a heavy price.”

The White House offered no details on what prompted the warning and spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said she had no additional information Monday night. chicagotribune.com

U.S. attacked Syria’s main base in fight against terrorists

The United States attacked the Syrian army’s main command center in the fight against terrorists of the Islamic State terror group (outlawed in Russia), Political and Media Adviser to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad Bouthaina Shaaban told the Al-Mayadeen TV channel.

According to her, “those who took such step should be put on par with terrorists.” “This is a cowardly strike and Syria will respond to it by taking steps agreed with its allies,” Shaaban said.

Assad’s adviser pointed out that the US attack came after Syrian government forces had achieved an important success on the eastern outskirts of Damascus and in the Hama Governorate, fighting off militants’ attacks. Shaaban slammed some Arab countries and members of the Syrian opposition based abroad, who welcomed the US attack. “Any Syrian, any Arab who welcomes this aggression is a traitor,” she stressed.

On Thursday night, at the direction of US President Donald Trump, the US forces fired 59 Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles (TLAM) on a Syrian military air base located in the Homs Governorate. The attack came as a response to the alleged use of chemical weapons in the Idlib Governorate on April 4. The US authorities believe that the airstrike on Idlib was launched from that air base.

Various reports say that the attack killed nine civilians, including children, besides, four Syrian servicemen were also killed, another four were wounded and two went missing.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, a number of facilities and six aircraft were destroyed, however, the runway and aircraft outside hangars remained intact. The Russian ministry said the US attack’s efficiency was low. tass.com

Kurdish media silent on possible chemical attack on Kurds

Something seams odd with the lack of reports in Kurdish media, on the supposed chemical attack on Syrian Kurds. Some possibilities are the attacks were carried out by Kurds who have allied themselves with terrorist groups in Syria. Kurdish media may wish to down play such an event as to not blur the lines, or tarnish the image of Kurds, as a successful partner in the fight against terrorism.

This could just be a delay while the facts come in, but it is still unusual to not see any mention, no “unconfirmed reports” & the like. This could be a fabricated event that never took place, designed to paint opposition in a bad light. It is possible that under the table deals with the US are talking place in exchange for, Kurdish silence on US-backed rebels performing chemical attacks, Kurds would get more US support towards backing Kurdish autonomy. At this time, I know that I don’t know.

Chemical agent sarin smuggled from Turkey to ISIS – MP

Islamic State terrorists in Syria received all necessary materials to produce deadly sarin gas via Turkey, Turkish MP Eren Erdem has told RT, insisting there are grounds to believe a cover up has taken place.

The main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) member, Erdem, brought up the issue for public discussion in parliament last week, citing evidence from an abruptly-closed criminal case. He accused Ankara of failing to investigate Turkish supply routes used to provide terrorists with toxic sarin gas ingredients.

“There is data in this indictment. Chemical weapon materials are being brought to Turkey and being put together in Syria in camps of ISIS which was known as Iraqi Al Qaeda during that time,” Erdem told RT. rt.com

I think the red line for Syria intervention, which invited a false flag chemical attack, by those in opposition to the Syrian government, hoping for military intervention, were brought about by pressure on the US by the Israeli government under the guise of ensuring Israel’s security. Basically I think Obama was tricked by Netanyahu into creating a pretext for a more overt war in Syria, an escalation Obama hoped to avoid. MSM reports indicate the contrary such as Israel Helped Obama Skirt ‘Red Line’ on Syria.

Iran’s president accuses nuclear powers of hypocrisy

Iran’s president Hassan Rouhani has berated the world’s nuclear powers, saying atomic weapons have not kept them safe and reiterating that his country is not seeking the bomb.

Rouhani, in an unusually fiery speech, avoided explicit mention of ongoing nuclear talks between the west and Iran, but accused atomic-armed states of hypocrisy.

“They tell us: ‘We don’t want Iran to make atomic bombs’, you who have made atomic bombs,” Rouhani said in Isfahan on Wednesday, a city 400km (250 miles) south of the capital, Tehran.

He then took aim at Israel, which has never acknowledged that it has nuclear weapons, dubbing the state a “criminal”.

“Have you managed to bring about security for yourselves with atomic bombs? Have you managed to create security for the usurper Israel?” Rouhani said.

“We don’t need an atomic bomb. We have a great, self-sacrificing and unified nation,” he said, referring to Monday’s launch of an observation satellite into space by Iran. theguardian.com

Deputy Iranian FM: US trying to turn Iraq into another Ukraine

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian expressed concern about the situation in Iraq, and said that the US is trying to create a chaotic atmosphere in the Arab country similar to what it did in Ukraine.

“The events in Iraq are following a plan by the United States to turn the country into a second Ukraine,” Reuters quoted Amir Abdollahian as saying in Moscow.

The Iranian deputy foreign minister pointed to Iraq’s incidents, and said, “What is going on in Iraq is a psychological and media war by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) to make the country insecure.”

Amir Abdollahian noted that Iran is ready to help Iraq if requested by the country, and said, “Iraq has not asked for Iran’s help, but Tehran is ready to dispatch weapons to Iraq within the framework of fighting terrorism.”

He reiterated that if the Iraqi ministry to fight terrorism calls for foreign aid Iran will provide such supports in accordance with international laws.

In similar remarks last week, Hamid Aboutalebi, the Iranian President’s Deputy Chief of Staff compared Iraq’s present conditions with Ukraine’s conditions before the separation of Crimea, and said, “I caution the Iraqi statesmen to take lesson from Ukraine’s recent political developments.”

He further noted that if the Iraqi people and leaders do not show sufficient wisdom and do not take warnings as serious, Iraq will face a similar fate like Ukraine. farsnews.com

Syria handed over 100% of declared chem weapons stockpile

The last of Syria’s declared chemical weapons have been handed over. “All declared chemical weapons have left Syria,” OPCW Director General Ahmet Üzümcü told reporters at a press conference Monday.

“The last of the remaining chemicals identified for removal from Syria were loaded this afternoon aboard the Danish ship Ark Futura. The ship made its last call at the port of Latakia in what has been a long and patient campaign in support of this international endeavor,” Üzümcü announced.

The destruction of the most hazardous substances will take place in Mediterranean international waters, on the American ship ‘Cape Ray.’

Less hazardous substances will be destroyed in specialized facilities in Finland and the US.

Syria had 100 tonnes of toxic material remaining in the country, which had been approximately 8 percent of an initial 1,300 tonnes reported to OPCW. On April 27 it was announced that over 92% of Syrian chemical stockpile had been removed. The complete weapons destruction deadline was set for June 30.

Another OPCW visit will take place soon to Damascus to fully confirm the information and an investigation into alleged use of chlorine will be ongoing after the last shipment. rt.com

Syrian Arab Army continue to make advances against militans

President Bashar al-Assad has said that the country’s three-year civil war is turning in the government’s favour, state news agency SANA reported.

“This is a turning point in the crisis, both militarily in terms of the army’s achievements in the war against terror, and socially in terms of national reconciliation processes and growing awareness of the truth behind the (attacks) targeting the country,” he said.

Syria’s army has made a series of advances in recent months, overrunning opposition bastions near the Lebanese border and in the central province of Homs.

“The state is trying to restore security and stability in the main areas that the terrorists have struck,” said Assad, adding “we will go after their positions and sleeper cells later.”

But there is still no political solution in sight for the war, which has war that has cost more than 150,000 lives, caused massive destruction, forced nearly half the Syrian population to flee their homes.

Syrian warplanes on Sunday launched fresh strikes on rebel strongholds on the edge of Damascus, some of which used highly destructive barrel bomb attacks, a monitoring group said. theguardian.com
